Sore Muscles and Big Gains for Charity
Honors students join community collaboration and turn out more than 35 volunteers for this year’s Newton Charity Lawn and Leaf Day, November 10

On a beautiful and chilly (!) fall Saturday, Lasell Honors students joined with members of the Multicultural Student Union, Mexico Shoulder to Shoulder, and the Boston chapters of the national Latina sorority Omega Phi Beta as well as the Nu Chapter of the national fraternity La Unidad Latina Lambda Upsilon Lambda, Inc.

Why??? To rake lawns in support of children’s education in Mexico!

We had an excellent day! Thanks to great volunteers and our generous Newton, Weston and Dedham neighbors, we generated over $3000 for the non-profit charity Niños de Veracruz (Children of Veracruz, Mexico). Read about our non profit.

Guess what?  That non-profit, NDV,  was founded by Lasell college students, and Lasell Honors students have served as Presidents, officers and participants for all four years of its existence. Go Honors!  Go NDV! Meet NDV’s Presidential Quartet.

A Night of Live Theater -- A First-Year Tradition
On October 25, 70 Lasell students and faculty headed to the prestigious Boston Lyric Stage for a performance of Christopher Shinn's psychological drama, Dying City.  President Michael Alexander and his wife Mary Barbara attended, as did Steve Bloom, Dean of Undergraduate Education.

The Presidential Seminar -- Depth and Dimension
President Michael Alexander conducts a seminar-style discussion with every Honors 101 class each fall.  In these late October sessions the President led students in discussion of World War I poetry by soldier-poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon.  He compared the subtext and tone of the poems to the structure and meanings in a new play, Dying City, by Christopher Shinn. Honors students attended the play at Boston's Lyric Stage on October 25.

Jazz, Hip Hop and Real Talk – Caliente! Revolutions in Poetry and Jazz
World class poet Magdalena Gomez and jazz musician and composer Fred Ho came to Lasell, October 11.
A Warm Welcome and Dinner with President Michael Alexander
Ten upperclass Honors mentors joined the new first-year class for dinner with President Michael Alexander on September 19.  The President offered a warm welcome. It was a great way to meet new friends and get advice from Honors students who have learned the ropes.
