Stephanie Kelly ’13 entered a full-time position as an assistant manager at Abercrombie & Fitch after earning her BA in Management from Suffolk University. She was soon promoted to store manager, but couldn’t shake the feeling that she was capable of more. “I knew I was ready for a career shift,” Stephanie recalls. “My mom encouraged me to think about what made me happy and build a career around that. I’ve always been an athlete, so the sports industry seemed like a natural fit.” She got a taste for the work by volunteering at charity functions sponsored by the Boston Red Sox, which cemented her desire to change fields – and inspired her to pursue a master’s degree to kickstart a new career.
Stephanie was immediately attracted to Lasell because here she would have the chance to earn a sports management degree while also concentrating in hospitality – another of her passions. She was further attracted to Lasell’s proximity to Boston, affordability, and flexible course structure. Says Stephanie, “Lasell offered the perfect blend of what I was interested in, so it was an easy decision to enroll.” Now, as an account manager for the Museum of Science, Boston, her hard work is paying off. Stephanie is building on what she's learned at Lasell as she books and manages more than 150 events a year at the Museum of Science in Boston, New England’s most visited cultural institution.
What was your classroom experience at Lasell like?
Many of my classes at Lasell were discussion-based, which was great because my classmates had such a diversity of life experiences. Most had already worked in the field they were studying, so there was a lot to learn from my peers as well as my professors. I also liked that the course material wasn’t exclusively tied to a textbook, and that class dialogue played a large role in the curriculum.
Were you able to maintain a work-life balance?
Many of my classes were online, which allowed me to continue working full-time. Because my position was in retail, my schedule would fluctuate week to week, so I was able to accommodate my internships. Though there were a lot of late nights, I’m grateful for the flexibility Lasell allowed, as it let me juggle a hectic calendar.
What internships did you complete over the course of the program?
With help from faculty in the department and my internship coordinator, I completed two internships. The first was with the Shamrock Foundation, a non-profit arm of the Boston Celtics focused on helping children in the Boston area. It included many interactions between Celtic players and the community, and I was responsible for the communications related to those events and for managing requests for charitable donations. My second internship was with the Deutsche Bank Championship, a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour that takes place over Labor Day weekend. I helped plan multiple events during the week and acted as a media liaison for the tournament. Both experiences gave me real-world insight into event planning and were incredible preparation for my current work. In addition, because I completed two internships and built out a robust professional network, I was able to provide some of my classmates with advice and mentoring when they were applying for their internships.
How has your Lasell experience impacted what you are doing now?
I work as an account manager at the Museum of Science, Boston, and serve as the primary contact for clients booking events. I often find myself thinking back to my classes at Lasell and discussions with my classmates and professors about increasing client satisfaction and managing relationships, especially when I’m working to foster partnership with individuals or organizations who may become repeat clients. I really enjoy it, and I feel like I’ve found the career path I was meant to follow – and I’ll always rely on the skills I gained at Lasell.
