Neil Hatem's scholarly interests are centered on mathematics but expand to such areas as leadership and philanthropic activities involving Lasell College students, including relieve work in New Orleans to aid in the Hurricane Katrina clean-up effort, a festival to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis, and work with Habitat for Humanity to help construct affordable housing for year round residents of Martha's Vineyard. These efforts have attracted local attention, especially the Hurricane Katrina effort, as articles appeared about this cause in The Boston Globe, The Newton Tab and The Daily News Tribune. Neil Hatem also works as an assistant coach with Lasell's women's basketball team. He is currently completing his Ed.D at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, with research focusing on the effect graphing calculators have on college mathematics student achievement.
About teaching, Neil Hatem writes: "I like to see the smile on students' faces when they solve a problem and realize they can do math. In addition, working with Lasell's honor students on various philanthropic journeys has given me a satisfaction I cannot describe in words. Lasell is a great community, from students to faculty to the administration, and that is why I chose Lasell!"
