The Art and Craft of Millinery Design: Marie Galvin

Marie Galvin is an award winning Irish hat designer, based in Boston. Galvin owns and operates GALVIN-ized Headwear and specializes in designing women's millinery including hats, fascinators and all special occasion headwear. Galvin offers some of the most diverse, unique collections of handcrafted hats in Boston. GALVIN-ized Headwear was voted Best Hat Shop in Boston by Boston Magazine in 2010. Galvin’s work also includes numerous awards and is featured in high profile international and domestic publications with clients such as Clair Dane, Alicia Keys and Cher.

Groovy high crowned topper with deep brim, made from synthetic plush material. The brown, gold, and teal splotches on a cream ground exhibit a tie dye effect. Internal grosgrain sweatband includes two small tortoise shell combs for a snug and secure fit. Low rounded crown covered with layers of hand-dyed mahogany and black turkey feathers. The structure is supported with a base of black felt and includes a grosgrain sweatband. Artfully embellished with a turkey feather and rhinestone rosette on the center back.

Neutral colored straw bonnet embellished with purple and white silk flowers, and attached fabric ties made from silk. Lined with felt and silk for a more comfortable fit. Black sheared fur and velvet picture hat with plumed ostrich feather. Crown is enhanced with a purple velvet bow, and metallic decorations, and is lined in silk.

Wide brimmed hat made from peach faille, buckrum, and lace. The surface of the brim consists of an off-white lace, and the underside is made from black lace. The crown is embellished with a wired bow ribbon and clay-like flowers. Straw hat with navy silk trimming and wooden beaded embellishments. Fabric accents create a geometric style pattern. The brim is turned up on the right side, and the crown is lined in black silk.

Silver square link cap made from a light weight metal resembling that of chain mail. Trimmed with smaller square links on the edge of the brim. This design also includes an off-white fabric lining and grosgrain ribbon sweatband. Buckram shaped crown and brim made from taupe silk georgette embellished with antique gold metallic braided flowers and blue silk embroidery thread. Lined with striped silk in shades of rose and blue-grey.
