Fashion Research Abroad

June 23rd | From Sam & Meghan

June 23, 2014

Today, the merchandising and design students were divided into separate groups. The design students worked on a pleating technique with Madame Picco while the merchandising students went on boutique visits with Olivier Roux. Merchandising students took the metro system to arrive at our first destination, which was Hermes. Mr. Roux advised us to notice the differences in prices, products, and quality of the stores that we would visit. Hermes was exceptionally large, and very crowded. After Hermes, we visited the Dior store. Dior boasted everything from purses, to cosmetics, to home  goods. After Dior, we stopped by Chanel. The two floors of Chanel were not as bright and colorful as Hermes and Dior, but were nonetheless spectacular. Every product was made with such precision; it was true beauty and luxury.

Our final stop was at the Louis Vuitton store. This retail space is the brand's second largest location, and it was very large. With many levels of handbags, luggage, accessories, and more, it felt very easy to get lost. We strategically broke up into small groups when entering the stores, as not to disrupt the shoppers or the staff. This strategy avoided the 'unwelcoming' that Mr. Roux warned us about which can include a dismissive greeting.

When the boutique visits were over, both groups joined together to hear Madame Picco speak about her career in the couturier of Madame Gres.

Madame Picco

She gave us the background of Madame Gres’ life, and how she began. She presented to the group original sketches and had half scale mannequins for everyone to look at and feel. She showed us several pleated dresses she made, and allowed the students to try them on. Once the garment was on, the students observed how surprisingly light the material felt, even with all the pleating.

After an exciting afternoon, the students gathered once again to attend a ballet at the Opera House. This elegant night out was filled with talented dancers supported by a wonder orchestra. Together with the beauty of the Opera Garnier made for the perfect ending to another fashion-filled day.
