Education Majors

The Education Department offers majors in Early Childhood Licensure, Elementary Education Licensure, Secondary Education Licensure, and Non-Licensure:

Early Childhood Licensure

Early Childhood Licensure (pre-kindergarten - grade 2) 
This program incorporates Massachusetts Department of Education requirements for initial licensure as a teacher of children in pre-kindergarten - grade 2 with and without special needs. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Arts degree Early Childhood Licensure (pre-kindergarten - grade 2).

 

Elementary Education Licensure

Elementary Education Licensure (grades 1-6) 
This major is designed specifically for Elementary Education students and is intended to offer its graduates knowledge in several different disciplines. Students will explore various genres of literature, various topics in mathematics and science, and various periods in world and American history.  The program incorporates Massachusetts Department of Education requirements for initial licensure as a teacher of children in grades 1-6. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education Licensure (gradues 1-6).

Elementary Education and Applied Mathematics (grades 1-6) Majors 
This major is designed for students who plan to teach mathematics at the elementary school level (grades 1-6). The program incorporates Massachusetts Department of Education requirements for initial licensure as a teacher of children in grades 1-6. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education Licensure (gradues 1-6) and Applied Mathematics.

 

Secondary Education Licensure

Secondary Education Licensure (grades 8- 12) and Applied Mathematics
This major provides a specialization in mathematics while preparing graduates to teach in secondary classrooms. This program incorporates Massachusetts Department of Education requirements for initial licensure as a teacher of History or English in secondary grades (8-12). Graduates recieve a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education Licensure (grades 8-12) and Applied Mathematics.

Secondary Education Licensure (grades 8- 12) and English
This major is designed specifically for Secondary Education students and is intended to offer its graduates a specialization in English language and literature.  This program incorporates Massachusetts Department of Education requirements for initial licensure as a teacher of History or English in secondary grades (8-12). Graduates recieve a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education Licensure (grades 8-12) and English.

Secondary Education Licensure (grades 8- 12) and History
This major is designed specifically for elementary education students and is intended to offer its graduates knowledge in several different disciplines in the humanities.  This program incorporates Massachusetts Department of Education requirements for initial licensure as a teacher of History or English in secondary grades (8-12). Graduates recieve a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education Licensure (grades 8-12) and History.

 

Non-Licensure:

Non-Licensure: Interdisciplinary Studies major with a concentration in Curriculum & Instruction
This major is designed for students seeking a career in an education-related field that does not require Massachusetts teacher licensure.  Graduates receive a Bachelor of Arts in Non-Licensure: Interdisciplinary Studies major with a concentration in Curriculum & Instruction.
