September 2017

The Rockwell Teachers and I welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year.   We are all anticipating an exciting and happy year for your children.  As a staff, we work collectively and in our separate classes to ensure the best possible experience for each child.  Throughout the year we strive towards our goal of a nurturing and caring environment where each child may move toward her/his optimum growth.  As you already know, our curriculum, daily plans, and assessments are influenced by the Multiple Intelligences philosophy of Howard Gardener.

Wed, September 13 - soccer/ball skills program begins 1:15-2:00 pm
Thurs, September 14 - from 3:00 to 4:00 - Family Ice Cream Social on the playground
Wed, September 20 - Music and movement with Ms. Lidia
Thurs, September 21 - Parent Advisory Board Meeting, 8:45 - 9:45 am
Fri, September 26 - Imagine and Move with Brenda Callahan

Once again this year, we will be offering an early drop-off each morning at The additional cost will be $6 for any or all of that half hour. Payments can be made in advance or at the end of each week.

Rockwell is a nut-free environment.  Please keep that in mind when packing lunches.

On Thursday afternoon, September 14th, we will have an ice cream social on the playground from 3:00 to 4:00. This is an opportunity for families to get acquainted or reacquainted. Come and enjoy an afternoon snack (ice cream and fruit bars) with your Rockwell Family!

If you are interested in any, or all of the stay-day program please remember to fill out the the registration form and return it with payment by the first day of school.   Also, we do accept stay-day requests on a day-to-day basis.   When possible, we appreciate a day's notice. Please pay for your child's drop-in stay days by the end of each week.
The fee for our extended day program is $12 per hour ($18 for lunch bunch, 11:30-1:00).
Please see the extended day form for more information.

We are very fortunate to have 3 of our student aides returning to Rockwell this semester.  They are Gabby Patterson, Mackenzie Knight, and Corinne Palmer.   We are pleased to have all of them back and look forward to working with them again this year.  Schedules have not yet been determined, but you are bound to see one or all of their smiling faces at drop-off time or pick-up times.  Welcome back, Ladies!

Ms Lidia Rosenbaum has been our Music Specialist for several years.  She is warm, kind and very creative, and the children have always loved her visits.  She will be returning to Rockwell this year  approximately every other Wednesday, and will do three ½ hour sessions teaching new songs, creative movement, and having a lot of fun.

In addition to check payments, Lasell College accepts tuition and stay-day payments online at (click on "payments").  If you are paying in 4 installments, your 1st payment was due on July 15th, and the next payment will be due on September 15th.

On Wednesday afternoons, September 13th through Nov. 1st, from 1:15 to 2:00, Ahead of the Game will be doing a soccer and ball skills programPlease note that our starting date is on the 13th and not the 20th as indicated on the Extended Day form. The eight week sessions will end on November 1st.  In addition to the 2:00 extended day fee, the cost is $96 for this program.  This $96 fee is paid directly to Be head of the Game. Children who are signed up for Wednesday stay-days are not required to take part in this program.  Please see the extended day contract for stay-day fees for these Wednesdays.

The Rockwell late policy includes a grace period of five minutes.  There is a $10 late fee after those five minutes, and $20 after 15 minutes or after 3 late pick-ups.  This policy is stated in your Parent Handbook.

The Rockwell Advisory Board was instituted many years ago to enhance communication between the Center and its families. The purpose of this Board is to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas so that we may ensure the highest quality experiences for the children in our school.  Both the parents' ideas and questions build the agenda for our meetings along with those brought by the administration. In the past, we have worked together on fundraising events, have built and maintained pieces of playground equipment, have helped with school celebrations, and plan an annual Family Night and/or Silent Auction.  The Advisory Board members act as representatives from their children's classrooms to the administration.  The guidance and advice of the Board has been very helpful in maintaining and improving the education we provide for the children.  All parents are invited to be a part of this board.  We meet approximately 4 times per year at 8:45 in the morning, and often communicate via email.   If you are interested, please let me know, or simply attend our first meeting which will be held on Thursday, September 21st.

Parking is allowed on both sides of Aspen Ave., and you can enter through the playground door.  After the first week or so, we are asking that you make your drop-off time as brief as possible to allow everyone an opportunity to park.  For safety reasons, there is no turning, backing up, or parking in the school driveway.  Children and their families are often walking in and out of the building at drop-off and pick-up times.  We appreciate your understanding and patience.

So that we can be better aware of children's departures, we will continue to use a sign-out system throughout the year.  Each class will have a sign out sheet and we ask that you sign your initials next to your child's name and indicate the time of pick-up.  Please make everyone who picks up your child aware of this policy.  Thank-you!

  • School opens at 8:30 each morning.  Early drop-off time is available at 8:00.  There is a $6 charge for any or all of those 30 minutes.  Please make sure to make payments by the end of each week.
  • For their safety, we tell children that it is an "adult job" to open gates and doors. Please help us to reinforce that "rule" by asking your child to wait for you to open the door at pick-up times.  Please don't forget to initial your child out at the end of his/her day.   It is also important to have written permission for pick-up changes.  Each class provides a daily sign-up for this purpose.  Also, in order for children to be less confused at pick-up time, we ask that you be responsible for him/her as soon as you arrive.
  • Each child should have a complete change of clothing at school at all times in the boxes provided.  It is especially important to have a change of underwear and socks, and it also makes it easier for us if clothing is labeled.  Thank You.
  • Out of respect for your child and his/her teachers, please refrain from using your cell phone while dropping off and/or picking up your child.
  • If you have a particular issue that you would like to discuss with your child's teachers, please set up a time with them at drop-off for a meeting or phone call.  If your child is ill or will not be in school for the day, we would greatly appreciate a call in the morning letting us know.  The office number is 617-243-2355, the 3's and 4's classroom number is 243-2335, and the transition kindergarten number is 243-2011.

  • We will be holding a parent curriculum night in October, but the date has not yet been set.  We will send you a "save the date" email as soon as that happens.   This is a great time to learn about your child's day and ask any questions you might have about the program. This is a parent-only event, please.
  • Class and individual photos will be taken by Nicki Pardo on Friday, October 6th. This will be Nicki's fourth visit to Rockwell and her photos are always great!!  More info to come.....

You can often find flyers and brief notices of events being held in Newton and surrounding communities on our playground door.  I will also make note of these, whenever possible, in our monthly newsletter.
