America Reads & Counts

Overview

65 work-study employment positions exist for Lasell College students to become trained as elementary school tutors in the areas of literacy and mathematics. Tutors work a minimum of two afternoons per week at one of three different school sites.

America Reads

The focus of this tutoring program is to build enthusiasm about reading in children from grades K-4. Tutors work one-on-one with children who need a little extra attention and care to feel confident in their reading skills. America Reads training covers child development and behavior, expectations of the job, school orientation, how children learn to read, techniques you can use to be a good tutor, and a review of the materials you will use on-site.

America Counts

The focus of this tutoring program is to build enthusiasm about mathematics in children from grades K-4. Tutors work one-on-one with children who need a little extra attention and care to feel confident in their math skills. America Counts training covers child development and behavior, expectations of the job, a school orientation, an introduction to the math concepts to be taught at each grade level, techniques you can use to be a good tutor, and a review of materials you will use on-site.

Logistics

  • Preference given to Federal Workstudy students.
  • Tutors are paid $8.75/hr in their first year, with a raise of $.25/hr for each consecutive year they participate in the program. Van Drivers are eligible for other financial incentives.
  • Transportation is provided to the school. Travel time is paid time, and should be used to bond as a team, review your tutoring challenges and experiences, or fill out journals.
  • Excellent attendance and a year-long commitment is required and expected by your supervisors and the child you tutor.
  • Daily supervision will be provided by a Student Coordinator who will track your attendance, review your journal and role model excellent tutoring.
  • Application and interview required for new tutors.
  • All majors and class years are considered eligible for these jobs.
  • Choose a program (Reads or Counts) and choose a school (Haynes EEC, Mason Pilot Elementary School, St. Patrick School).
